Narrative Medicine Series

This unique professional development series blends reading, writing and discussion as a means for medical professionals to reflect on exposure to patient trauma.

Through the reading of short literary passages, poetry and essays, followed by freeform writing, participants are able to reflect on their experiences, and deepen their understanding of vicarious trauma on their careers and their lives. By integrating information and discussion about vicarious trauma and resilience, participants report feeling validated and supported. They express a sense of relief, and deeper self-awareness.

In collaboration with a Boston Medical Center physician, Sheela Maru Katherine and Lisa were invited to share their expertise along with Massachusetts General Hospital physician and Writer-in-Residence Suzanne Koven.
